Precautions and Contraindications

Introduction to Innerminx

Innerminx is devoted to offering safe and transformative sound healing experiences using Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls and Glow Crystal Singing Bowls (hereafter referred to as ‘bowls’). While sound healing has been widely recognised for its ability to promote deep relaxation and well-being, it is essential to ensure that sessions are conducted safely and ethically. This document outlines key precautions and contraindications to safeguard both practitioner and client, ensuring that every session is approached with care and professionalism.

It is important to note that crystal singing bowls are not a substitute for medical advice. If a client experiences health concerns, they should consult their physician. As the practitioner, I am responsible for my conduct and the safety of those receiving sound healing. Innerminx and Mikaela Elliott accept no responsibility for your actions while playing the bowls for others.

General Safety Guidelines

  • Do not place a person’s head inside a bowl while playing. A safe distance is at least 12 inches away.

  • Avoid playing loudly near someone’s head or placing a bowl directly near their ears.

  • When chiming a bowl, do so gently to avoid causing an overwhelming response.

  • If feeling fatigued or unwell, it is not advisable to facilitate a session. Sound healing is most effective when the practitioner is mentally, emotionally, and physically present.

  • Do not consume alcohol or substances that impair clarity before playing the bowls for others.

Specific Precautions and Contraindications

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that can cause seizures due to sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain. Some individuals have musicogenic epilepsy, where specific sounds—including musical instruments, bells, or humming—can trigger seizures.

While this is rare, clients with epilepsy should be fully aware of their triggers and are encouraged to consult with their doctor before receiving a sound healing session. If there is any uncertainty, sound healing should be avoided for their safety.

Pregnancy

While sound healing can be beneficial during pregnancy, special care must be taken:

  • Crystal Singing Bowl sessions are not advised during the first 12 weeks (first trimester). This is the most delicate stage of pregnancy, where the foetus is developing.

  • After the first trimester, sessions should be conducted gently, ensuring bowls are played at a safe distance (approximately 3 feet/1 metre) from the pregnant individual.

  • No bowls or therapeutic sound tools should be placed directly on the body during pregnancy.

Metal Implants, Plates, or Medical Devices

Individuals with metal implants (such as plates, pins, or ball joints) or electronic medical devices (such as pacemakers and cochlear implants) may experience discomfort due to the vibrations of the sound. In rare cases, vibrations could interfere with the function of electronic implants.

  • Clients with implants should be informed of potential risks.

  • Verbal and written consent must be obtained before proceeding with a session.

  • Practitioners should ensure they have appropriate insurance to cover liability related to these conditions.

Severe or Clinical Mental Health Conditions

Sound healing can be deeply relaxing but may not be suitable for individuals with severe or clinical mental health conditions, including:

  • Schizophrenia, psychosis, or other disorders that impact perception and reality.

  • PTSD or severe anxiety conditions, especially where sound sensitivity (hypersensitivity) is a symptom.

Individuals experiencing hypersensitivity to sound may find certain frequencies triggering rather than calming. It is important to discuss any concerns before the session and ensure that sound healing is appropriate for the client’s mental well-being.

Minors (Under 18 Years Old)

  • Written permission from a parent or guardian is required before playing crystal singing bowls for a minor.

  • The minor must also give their own consent to the session.

  • A parent or guardian must remain present in the room at all times during the session.

Placing Bowls on the Body

  • It is inadvisable to place bowls or therapeutic sound tools directly on the body, especially for pregnant clients, individuals with metal implants, or those with known sensitivities.

  • If body placement is part of the session, the practitioner must clearly communicate this in advance and obtain written consent from the client.

  • The practitioner must ensure adequate insurance coverage for any potential risks.

Medical Clearance and Client Consent

If there is any doubt about the suitability of sound healing for a client, it is best to seek written confirmation from the client’s GP before proceeding. Ensuring informed consent and clarity in communication helps uphold professional standards and maintains client safety.

By following these precautions and contraindications, I am committed to providing a safe and ethical space for sound healing experiences.

This instruction serves as a guide for responsible sound healing practice under Innerminx, ensuring that every session prioritises the well-being of both the practitioner and the client.
